Ahead of the release of a new collection of his complete Decca recordings, presenter Sara Mohr-Pietsch speaks to the one of the greatest living pianists, Sir András Schiff, about the experience of communion during live performance. He tells Sara about performing on Mozart’s fortepiano, the introspective nature of Bach’s experimentation with counterpoint, and why he’s finally ready to tackle the composer’s monumental work - The Art of Fugue. 

Music Matters hears from the violinist Elena Urioste, and pianist Tom Poster, about the challenges they faced performing hastily published scores of the music of underrepresented composers, and Professor of Music at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire, Christopher Dingle, discusses the process of compiling and editing of music of composer Joseph Bologne, the Chevalier de Saint-George, from contradictory sets of parts and manuscripts. 

Amid rehearsals for a concert this weekend with the London Philharmonic Orchestra, Sara joins conductor Karina Canellakis to hear about the out-of-body episodes and state of ‘flow’ she sometimes experiences while conducting. She describes the unknowable alchemy that often times connects conductors with orchestras, and the musical dreams she experiences when studying music scores. 

And the broadcaster and presenter of Radio 3’s Sound of Gaming, Elle Osili Wood, reviews a new book about to be published by the musicologist Stephanie Lind - Authenticity in the Music of Video Games. She shares her perspective about the role music plays in video games.
