Episode 4

Duration: 58 minutes

Available for 2 months

Aamer heads back to his home city of Liverpool, where he delves into his traumatic childhood and how his difficulties at home, and experiences of racism on the streets, shaped him into the lawyer he is today. While there, he reflects on the case that never left him: the murder of Surjit Singh Chhokar, a young Indian man who was fatally stabbed outside his home in Overtown, Lanarkshire, in November 1998. Three men were arrested and charged at different times in connection with his murder, but all three men walked free, and it was up to Aamer and the Chhokar family to launch a campaign for justice. After a bitter fight that lasted 18 years, and with multiple trials, appeals and inquiries, a change in the law meant that Aamer could finally take the case back to court and get justice for the Chhokar family.

Back at The Firm, Ryan and the team take the case of a man who took self-defence too far and who faces charges that seem unbeatable. Meanwhile, trainees Shelby and Rebecca are fitted for their court gowns, a rite of passage for all young lawyers. Show less
