Faith and Sexuality, World Mental Health Day and the dog-walkers guide to God.

Zara Janjua presents two hours of discussion on topics such as faith and sexuality, World Mental Heath day, the significance of Islamic names and the dog-walkers guide to God.

One of the big storylines dominating the final season of Netflix’s hugely popular "Sex Education" revolves around the complex experiences of LGBTQ+ individuals at the crossroads of faith. With news this week the Pope has discussed extending blessings to same-sex couples, Zara is joined by Gerard Swan, Chair of the charity Quest, and Reverend Laurene Lafontaine, the minister at Broughton St. Mary’s Parish Church in Edinburgh to explore the journey of individuals whose faith may not completely embrace their identity. 

  

Tuesday is World Mental Health Day. As part of the Scottish Mental Health Arts Festival, there will be a new exhibition about artist Mary Barnes and her artistic journey that started during a mental health crisis when she received treatment from controversial psychiatrist R D Laing. Curator Victoria Tischler, a Professor of Behavioral Science at the University of Surrey, and Mary Barnes' friend Ninian Stuart join Zara to discuss the exhibition. 

  

Zara talks to film director Anna Hints about her award-winning film Smoke Sauna Sisterhood which explores the unique sauna culture of Estonia and how it provides women with a space to be completely honest about their life experiences. 

 

Last week, a freedom of information request revealed that reports of racist bullying in Scottish schools had surged by 74% in the past three years. Dr. Khadija Mohammed, Senior Lecturer at the University of the West of Scotland and Founder of the Scottish Association of Minority Ethnic Educators, joins Zara to discuss what the findings might say about attitudes in schools.  

  

To mark Black History Month, the Glasgow Film Theatre will be showing Cassius X: Becoming Ali about the early story of Muhammad Ali's rise to fame, his conversion to Islam and his name change from Cassius Clay. Zara talks to Dawud Duncan and Saleem McGroarty, who both converted to Islam in their 20s, about the importance of changing one's name when adopting a new faith. 

 

Director of the Centre For Human Ecology Luke Devlin reveals the inspiration that Scottish poet Kenneth White has had on his life. 

  

Author and artist, Henry Martin, joins Zara to discuss his new book 'A Dog Walker's Guide to God' which reflects on how walking a dog can be a profound spiritual experience and an opportunity to connect with something greater than ourselves.
