Labour has won the Rutherglen and Hamilton West by-election with a swing of 20.4% from the SNP. Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer described it as "a seismic moment". The party's candidate Michael Shanks secured 17,845 votes, more than double the number polled by the SNP's Katy Loudon. Scottish First Minister Humza Yousaf, the SNP leader, said it was a disappointing night for his party. Conservative support fell by 11% with candidate Thomas Kerr saying that tactical voting had "squeezed" him out. The by-election was triggered by the removal of former SNP MP Margaret Ferrier after she broke Covid rules. Labour are hoping to win a large block of Scottish seats back from the SNP at the next general election with this by-election seen as a key test
