In the second of our programmes recorded at this year’s edition of Bluedot Festival, Isobel Waller-Bridge and Coby Sey take to the stage at the Jodrell Bank Observatory in Cheshire to perform with the BBC Concert Orchestra conducted by Robert Ames.

Isobel Waller-Bridge’s skills as the creator of sensitive and absorbing film scores and TV soundtracks (Black Mirror, Fleabag, Emma) has brought her critical acclaim, though last year’s debut solo album VIII brought her compositional voice into the limelight. At Bluedot, she plays piano in a suite of pieces taken from the album as well as a new untitled work, collaborating with orchestrator Lara Serafin to bring a fresh playfulness and experimentation palette of sounds and textures.

The world of Coby Sey’s artistry is hard to pin down, a music of deep atmospheres that straddles the genres of ambient, experimental, grime and hip hop. For this Unclassified Live performance, Sey worked with arranger George Barton to realise an expanded version of Eve (Anwummerɛ), a track from his 2022 album Conduit. The studio recording of the song features his wordless vocals, but, inspired by the festival surroundings, Sey speaks and sings new lyrics: “Being here, absorbing the environment, I was thinking about what space means to me. I was thinking about what we mean to each other as humans, in this lifetime, on this planet. I think it’s good to be kept grounded while also looking upwards.”
