From the response to the Covid-19 pandemic, to tackling climate change, mathematical models shape our world, helping us to evaluate and respond to very complex global issues. However, models have limitations and are not always accurate. So why do we rely so heavily on them, how do they really work and what happens when they go wrong?

Adam Walton sits down with Dr Erica Thompson from the Data Science Institute at the London School of Economics to discuss her first book, ‘Escape from Model Land’, exploring the pros and cons of mathematical modelling and revealing how we might improve them.
