Mary Beard talks to Philip Pullman, the Carnegie Prize-winning and globally best-selling author of the His Dark Materials trilogy of fantasy novels.

In a wide-ranging conversation, Pullman talks to Mary Beard about his love of language, rhythm and myth, his fears for the loss of civic decency in Britain, and, as a former teacher, his opinions on the contemporary education system. 

Pullman also reveals that achieving success later in life is preferable to early stardom and discusses relinquishing his work to screenwriters for adaptations for the big and small screen.
