Jeanie has lived in a children's home for two years, and has caught the attention of Joseph Campbell Clark, an eminent child psychologist who decides he wants to adopt her as an academic project. 

For his wife, Jeanie is not a project, she is a yearned-for child. 

Meanwhile, her twin sister Meg is told to stop speaking about her at home.
