Levies on steel and aluminium imports were introduced by the former US President in 2018

The World Trade Organisation says controversial steel and aluminium import tariffs, announced by former US President Donald Trump in 2018, breached its rules.

When former US President Donald Trump announced tough new tariffs on steel and aluminium imports, he called it a matter of 'national security'. Four years later, the World Trade Organisation has ruled that decision was in breach of its rules. The US says it has no intention of removing the tariffs. We look at why it matters for global markets.
