A young girl from the Caribbean island nation of St Lucia has grown up with the constant threat of dangerous hurricanes. She is surprised to learn from her mother that these hurricanes are also a sign of renewal and welcome change.

Are Hurricanes Always Devastating?, which features strong language, is part of a series of spoken word animations commissioned to celebrate the finalists of the 2022 BBC Words First scheme, which offers opportunities to fresh and emerging talent.

The words and narration are by poet Indira Toussaint, and the animation is by Gabriela Bran. The film is a Calling the Shots production for BBC Arts, supported by Arts Council England. Show less
