Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II spent her final days at Balmoral in the shadow of one of Scotland’s most famous and iconic mountains, Lochnagar.  We look back to a crisp morning in 2016, when Helen and Mark took a wander up there with writer and historian, Ian R Mitchell to get a sense of why it is such a source of fascination for so many people. 

For this week's midweek podcast, Mark talks about Rewilding with Peter Cairns of Scotland the Big Picture, on the banks of the River Feshie. We hear an excerpt of their conversation. 

We hark back to 2013, when Euan visited Invercauld Estate on Deeside to meet retired gamekeeper, Peter Fraser. They look back over Peter’s career, breeding Highland Ponies for over forty years- a breed held closely in the Queen’s heart.

We hear from Archie McArthur, past president of the Highland Cattle Society, about how the Queen’s patronage has influenced the society over the years, and why Highland Cattle are so iconic to Scotland’s countryside.

The Neighbouring Orchard is a network of apple trees planted out across East Edinburgh and East Lothian. It’s an orchard with a difference, spanning many miles, with each apple variety holding a unique historical link to the local area. To find out more, Maud Start meets Annie Lord, the grower behind the project.
