Insects crack the case of a missing teenager, and an art forger is caught by science.

Insect evidence helps crack the case of missing Warrington teenager Shafilea Ahmed, and a series of convincing John Anster Fitzgerald forgeries are uncovered by an art expert.

In this programme, we discover how the study of insects was crucial in solving the mysterious disappearance of a Warrington teenager. Murderers can go to great lengths to ensure there are no witnesses to their crime and no evidence left behind. The case of Shafilea Ahmed became a massive investigation that gripped the country. Even so, the killers were so careful, they almost got away with it, but for an expert witness with an extraordinary knowledge of blowflies.

Wherever there’s a crime, there’s an expert witness with knowledge to help solve it. They may make a career from working with the police, or they may just be called in on rare cases where their expertise is essential.   That’s what happened when an art expert found himself a key part of an investigation into a string of expensive forgeries of works by celebrated artist John Anster Fitzgerald.
