Our changing relationship with church buildings & have we become less deferential?

What do church buildings now mean to us, do we still need them? And has a shift from unquestioning faith in institutions to holding them accountable caused a decline in deference?

With more churches closing their doors, what do church buildings mean to us now? In a post-pandemic digital world, minister-in-training Bethany Pringle, Rev Stella Campbell of Skene Parish in Aberdeenshire, and Rev Richard Frazer of Greyfriars Kirk in Edinburgh, discuss whether the church is a building or a gathering of people, and if moving worship online is inevitable. 

Barbara Altounyan tells Cathy Macdonald why she set up Hospice Biographies, a charity that records interviews with terminally ill patients; with Rev Stella Campbell, they explore what the service offers the dying and their families. 

Nominated for the Orwell Prize, Sally Hayden’s book My Fourth Time, We Drowned, came after years of documenting the stories of migrants. She talks of the many disturbing stories she has encountered and the on-going humanitarian crisis.  

With the recent publication of Sue Gray’s report and the approaching Jubilee celebrations, Cathy asks if we have shifted from unquestioning faith in our institutions to an era of accountability, causing an erosion of deference; with Quaker and author Alastair McIntosh, Stephen Reicher, Professor of Psychology at the University of St Andrews, and Rev Richard Frazer. 

From working with prisoners to herding sheep - Church of Scotland reader Deirdre Yellowlees explains how her two very different jobs intriguingly cross over. 

In this week’s 100 Scottish Stories offering, Christine from the Western Isles tells how a diphtheria outbreak led members of one family into the health profession.

And Aaron Connolly, the founder of the therapeutic initiative Time to Tackle, speaks to Cathy about combatting depression and boosting good mental health with football and other physical activity.
