Mark Stephen and Euan McIlwraith with stories from the great outdoors.

Mark is in Braemar visiting the Duke of Rothesay Highland Games Pavilion, home of the Braemar Highland Games Centre.  He hears about their plans to build an arch to mark the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee and the excitement around the Braemar Gathering being held for the first time since 2019.

A Scotland wide scheme where you pay a small deposit of 20p when you buy a drink in a single-use container and then get the deposit back when you return the empty bottle or can, comes into action in August 2023.  Euan is in Aberdeenshire finding out why it’s causing concern for some smaller, rural producers. 

Author and curlew conservationist Roger Morgan-Grenville has been walking the length of the UK to raise awareness of curlew and study the progress of spring as he walks.  For our Scotland Outdoors podcast Mark joined him on a section of his walk near Dalwhinnie.  We hear an excerpt. 

Mark meets some members of Greener Kemnay, a group of residents who wish to support the reduction of energy usage, energy costs and carbon footprint for the whole village.  They show Mark round their community garden.

A few weeks ago, a team of archaeologists spent time on Eildon Hill North near Melrose.  Their finds and dating samples could help rewrite history by proving knights from King Arthur's era were still calling the hillfort their home.  We chat live to one of the local volunteers who was part of the dig. 			

Euan visits Findlater Castle on the Banff and Buchan Coast and delves into its incredible, and at times, rather dark history. 

While Mark was in Kenmore recently he was intrigued by the sound of bagpipes in the distance.  He sets off to find the source of the music.

And Euan teases us with another avian mystery, can you identify the bird from its call?
