Marking the 30th anniversary of the Siege Of Sarajevo

Cathy talks to a survivor of the Siege of Sarajevo 30 years on from the start of the conflict and meets endurance athlete Wim Hof to discuss the healing power of cold water

While the international community’s focus is on the humanitarian crisis in Ukraine, charities and NGOs are warning that other great tragedies are unfolding around the world, most noticeably in Somalia. Sally Foster-Fulton, Head of Christian Aid Scotland, and Daud Jiran, Mercy Corps Country Director for Somalia, discuss the on-going humanitarian disasters around the world, including droughts and famine.

Cathy Macdonald speaks to Esther Robertson and her partner Gayle Anderson about their new podcast, Looking for Esther. It tells the powerful true story of Esther, who was adopted and re-adopted as a baby, having three names and four homes before her third birthday. This comes off the back of calls for the Scottish Government to issue a formal apology to those affected by forced adoption.

Broadcaster & TV Critic Scott Bryan and Michael Richardson, writer and youth worker, explore the impact this drama could have, the challenges of navigating your sexuality at school, and how attitudes have changed over time.

This month marks 30 years since the start of the Siege Of Sarajevo, a four year war that claimed the lives of more than 11,000 citizens. Dr Sinan Sinanovic, a Lecturer at Glasgow Caledonian University, was a teenager in the city during this time. He shares his incredible story of survival during the conflict and the parallels with the current crisis in Ukraine.

With the Siege of Sarajevo in mind and the current war in Ukraine continuing, Dr Roxani Krystalli, from the School of International Relations at the University of St Andrews, and Duncan Morrow, Professor in Politics and Director of Community Engagement at Ulster University, look at the challenges of rebuilding peaceful relations between societies divided by conflict.

In another of our 100 Scottish Stories, we hear from Donald Adamson about his grandparents and the effects of a Fife mining accident that happened just before the beginning of the 1926 general strike.  

Cathy meets Wim Hof, the man behind the BBC’s latest hit show Freeze The Fear. The record-breaking endurance athlete discusses why he immerses himself in extreme cold conditions to reawaken and heal his body and mind.
