Seonaid Aitken celebrates the centenary of bassist, composer & bandleader Charles Mingus. Plus the Brodie Jarvie Trio are in session with special arrangements of music by Mingus.

Seonaid Aitken celebrates the centenary of one of the leading lights of jazz – bassist, composer and bandleader Charles Mingus, including some special archive performances recorded at the Helsinki Jazz Festival in 1976. Plus live in the studio Scottish bassist/bandleader Brodie Jarvie performs special arrangements of music by Mingus with Norman Willmore on sax & Doug Hough on drums, and demonstrates the sonic possibilities of the upright bass via a guided tour of his instrument. Plus Richard Michael pays tribute to Mingus in this week’s Song Book looking at his classic composition ‘Good Bye Pork Pie Hat’. Plus music from fellow bass travellers including Esperanza Spalding, Squarepusher and Jaco Pastorius.
