Events seen from Denise's perspective.  

She's a married woman holidaying in Hendaye, who falls passionately in love with Yves, a veteran of the Great War.   

When they return to Paris Yves is poor and must return to his mundane office job. 

Denise feels the tone of their relationship change without understanding why; she wants him more than ever.
