A look at the devastating humanitarian cost of the war in Ukraine.

The devastating humanitarian cost of the war in Ukraine is becoming ever more apparent, with the UN estimating more than a million civilians have already fled across the borders  to neighbouring countries. UNICEF’s James Elder brings us the situation on the ground at the Romanian border while UNICEF’s Head Of Scotland office Lucinda Rivers and Mercy Corp interim Director for Europe Michael McKean join Connie to discuss how aid organisations are responding to the crisis. 
 
We hear another contribution to BBC Radio Scotland's project celebrating 100 Years of Scottish Stories.  In a personal family tale of love and loss, Bill Daick shares his memories of his late wife, Professor Lesley Daick.

Reporter Anna Magnusson ventures out into the garden in search of Spring. She looks forward to the new growing season with some friends who share the vegetable plot – and looks back to her childhood garden.

The Sonica festival kicks off in Glasgow this week, opening with a Scottish Gaelic burial rite song performed live to an immersive sound and sight experience. Kistvaen is a unique collaboration between celebrated Isle of Skye Gaelic singer Anne Martin and musicians and artists Roly Porter and MFO. Connie speaks to them about how their own experiences of grief have shaped their music.

While the devastating scenes of war in Ukraine are hard for us to process, for Ukrainians and people of Ukrainian heritage living here in Scotland, the images perhaps have a deeper resonance. Connie is joined by Maria Morozuik, a mum of two living in Edinburgh, to discuss the efforts she and other people from Ukrainian families are putting into collecting essential supplies to send to the region and her fears for her own family and friends living there.

To mark International Women’s Day on Tuesday, writer Hira Ali discusses her book, “Her Allies: A Practical Toolkit to Help Men Lead Through Advocacy”,  a step-by-step guide that offers practical advice to men on how to support women in the workplace. Luke Devlin, a member of the Catholic Worker Movement, joins her to explore why some men find it hard to put their good intentions into action.

And Luke Devlin and Mario Aguilar, author of The Way Of The Hermit, discuss a documentary showing at this year’s Glasgow Film Festival called The Hermit of Treig which charts the life of Ken Smith, a man who has been living alone on the shores of Loch Treig, for nearly 40 years. And in this period of Lent they consider the benefits of solitary reflection.
