As the Millennium Dome opens to widespread ridicule, Napster and the PS2 are headlining developments in tech, Big Brother arrives in our living rooms, Billy Elliott and Gladiator are in the multiplexes and the charts embrace Robbie, S Club and Ronan while finding room for newcomers Eminem, Coldplay and Moby (oh, and Bob the Builder!) The word of the year is "wassup" as Ken Livingstone becomes the first elected Mayor of London, George W Bush wins a disputed US election and Sven-Göran Eriksson takes over as England manager. Venus wins Wimbledon, Steve Redgrave gets a 5th Olympic gold and there are tragic accidents in the air and on the rails.
