The pressures on young sports stars and tackling Islamophobia in society.

A 290-mile pilgrimage bringing attention to the plight of refugees, the pressures on young sports stars, and why Britain and Europe still has a problem with Islamophobia.

Author Tharik Hussain discusses his book ‘Minarets in the Mountains’, a journey he took through the Mosques and Madrasahs of the Western Balkans to uncover the history of Islam in this corner of Europe. 

A recent Scottish Parliament report on Tackling Islamophobia revealed that 83% of Muslim respondents said they had experienced abuse in Scotland because of their faith. Tony talks to Tharik Hussain and Yahya Barry, Director of Edinburgh’s Olive Tree Madrasah, about why Islamophobia is still such a problem in society. 

It’s been an incredible summer of sport from Wimbledon to the Euros, but there has also been much discussion about the criticism aimed at some of Britain’s youngest sports stars in tennis and football. Is there too much pressure heaped on their shoulders, and what impact does this have on their mental health? Sports psychologist Alban Dickson and former Olympic bronze medallist Eilidh Doyle share their thoughts.

As Willie Rennie announces his plans to step down as leader of the Scottish Liberal Democrats, we explore the right time for leaders to bow out of a role that they have loved and how difficult that can be. Audrey Cumberford MBE, the principal of Edinburgh College; Tanya Castell MBE, Founder and CEO of Changing the Chemistry, and Pádraig O’Tuama, theologian and former leader of the Corrymeela Community, bring their wise leadership heads to the discussion.

There are people, places, and things in our lives that inspire and touch us deeply - this week we take a trip to the seaside with Edinburgh based poet Lynn Davidson, who talks about a special place from her childhood years that she still carries in her heart.  

Poet Padraig O’Tuama, host of the podcast Poetry Unbound, discusses why poetry has been such a touch stone for many during the pandemic.

And Fr Jim Walls, the Spiritual Director of the Scots College in Rome, has just completed a 290 mile pilgrimage from Iona to the Holy Isle at Lindisfarne to highlight the plight of migrants in Calais. He tells Tony about the experience and the hospitality he received along the way.
