Deadly 60: Series 4: Gabon Jungle

Steve heads to Gabon in search of crocodiles, chimpanzees and feisty elephants.

Steve travels to Gabon for the first time. Exploring Loango National Park, Steve goes in search of crocodiles, surprisingly deadly chimpanzees and feisty forest elephants.

Steve ventures to the wilds of Gabon for the first time. He heads to the incredible Loango National Park on the western coast of Gabon, home to some awesome deadly predators.

First up, Steve heads out onto the waterways in search of the small but deadly dwarf crocodile. Despite the fact that it is one of the smallest crocodiles on earth, its bite packs a mighty punch. With the help of local guides Yuri and Kharl, Steve hopes they will strike lucky.

However, crocodiles aren’t the only animals you can bump into at night - Gabon’s infamous forest elephants are lurking in the shadows. They may look like the savannah elephants seen all over Africa, but they are very different. After spotting a few footprints at night, Steve and the team decide looking for them in the day will be a much better idea - but these giants aren’t that easy to find. Luckily, Yuri and Kharl's tracking skills are second to none. They have learned them from their time as poachers. Turning their lives around, they are now protecting this incredible species and helping to save it from poachers like the ones they used to be. Steve finally captures his first glimpse of these phenomenal animals - but it doesn’t end there.

Next up, Steve has the unique opportunity to go tracking with the Loango Chimpanzee Project. Very few people have seen these animals, and Steve can’t wait to get out there. It doesn’t take long for the researchers to find them, but they are on the move and keeping up with a group of chimpanzees isn’t easy. Luckily, Steve gets the amazing opportunity to sit and watch them as they take a rest. He witnesses one of the chimpanzees taking a tortoise up into the canopy to eat. They are the only species of chimpanzee in the world known to prey on tortoises, smashing their shells against trees to eat the insides. Meanwhile, another group are digging up a bees’ nest - there really is no end to the ingenuity of these animals!

However, their story isn’t entirely a happy one - chimpanzees are still suffering as their habitat is destroyed, and they are taken and killed as a part of the bushmeat trade. This is not only deadly to the chimpanzees but to humans too, as many lethal diseases are passed between the species.

Finally, Steve encounters a forest elephant out in the open - something he and the crew will never forget.
