As dog thefts rise, campaigners are calling for a change in the law to protect their pets.

An increase in the number of dogs being stolen in the past year, has led 140,000 people to sign a petition, calling on the government to make pet theft a specific crime.

A BBC Freedom of Information request to police forces across the UK revealed that out of 645 dog theft crimes between January and July last year, only two resulted in prosecutions. Campaigners are arguing that current laws and sentencing are too lenient and don't take account of the suffering caused to stolen pets and their owners.
