Comedian Stewart Lee and director Michael Cumming chat to Mark Radcliffe and Stuart Maconie about their documentary King Rocker: A Film about Robert Lloyd and The Nightingales.

Mark Radcliffe and Stuart Maconie present a feast of great music and chat for weekend breakfast.

Their guests today are Stewart Lee and director Michael Cumming who have collaborated on a new documentary film ‘King Rocker: A Film about Robert Lloyd and The Nightingales’. In it, Lee investigates a missing piece of punk history: Robert Lloyd. Lloyd is best known for fronting cult Birmingham bands The Prefects and The Nightingales, and he has survived under the radar for over four decades.  

Stewart Lee is an award-winning comedian who grew up in the West Midlands. He made the move from BBC Radio to BBC TV with the show Fist Of Fun with Richard Herring in the 1990s. Since then he’s written several books, co-wrote Jerry Springer: The Opera and won a BAFTA for his series Stewart Lee’s Comedy Vehicle. He’s also a lifelong fan of both The Nightingales and The Fall.

Director Michael Cumming has worked on Brass Eye, The Mark Thomas Comedy Product, The Omid Djalili Show and Toast Of London. Cumming began directing at the BBC on Tomorrow’s World, and then as a freelance director for Lonely Planet and The Word before moving into comedy.
