Reviewing Steve McQueen's 'Small Axe', marking Diwali and Scottish Interfaith Week

Sir Geoff Palmer and Stewart Kyasimire review 'Small Axe'; an arts project in Dumfries and Galloway reflecting on this extraordinary year and marking Scottish Interfaith Week.

Kamala Harris has made history; she is the first woman and woman of colour to hold the position of Vice President Elect in the USA.  Briana Pegado, a Policy volunteer on the Biden Campaign, and Mridul Wadhwa, a political activist and Rape Crisis Centre manager look at the significance of this appointment.

Award winning director, Steve McQueen’s ‘Small Axe’ collection of films document stories from London’s West Indian community. Mangrove, the first in the collection, premieres on BBC One and tells the story of the highly publicised Mangrove Nine court case in 1970. Stewart Kyasimire, a Black Scottish filmmaker, and Sir Geoff Palmer, academic and Human Rights Campaigner, give their verdict. 

The Africa in Motion Film Festival has gone on-line this year. Filmmaker Stewart Kyasimire and Director of Africa in Motion, Liz Chege, discuss the importance of a festival like this in challenging stereotypes on the big screen,  especially against the backdrop of the Black Lives Matter movement.

Cathy speaks with author Karen Campbell and artist Annie Wild about a creative project in Dumfries and Galloway, ‘Atlas Pandemica: Maps to a Kinder World’, which has emerged in response to this extraordinary year we’ve found ourselves in. 

As part of our Inspiration series, poet Roger Robinson talks about being inspired by Booker Prize winning author Bernadine Evaristo.

Francis Hume of Interfaith Scotland tells Cathy about Scottish Interfaith Week and this year’s theme of Connectivity and Shanny Howall and Venus Carew discuss how they found out more about each other’s spiritual journeys as part of the week-long celebration.

Diwali is being celebrated by Hindus, Sikhs and Jains around the world, but unfortunately without the usual fireworks and light displays, due to the pandemic. The festival of lights is a reminder to focus on the victory of light over darkness. Samir Desai, from the Edinburgh Hindu Mandir and Cultural Centre, speaks about the meaning of Diwali and how the current restrictions have affected the marking of it.
