'It was just ridiculous ‘cos I can’t even remember when anybody announced that you better get your toilet roll in now quickly'. After being stunned by the bulk-buying which marked the start of lockdown, artist Caroline Gormley decided to use her skills on a project documenting scenes from her daily life - using oil paint on toilet paper. For her it provided a way of coping with the anxiety attached to her need to shield at that time.
After assuming caring responsibilities for her mother at the age of 12, Caroline was unable to pursue her dream of becoming an artist until, at the age of 37, she decided to go to art school. In the seven years since then she has usually been drawn to create large-scale pieces: 'maybe I’m making a statement because of the life that I led when I was younger when I felt as though I didn't have a voice'.
From face masks, coffee, a fringe needing cut and macaroni, to Janey Godley and Nicola Sturgeon - each colourful square was warmly received by an online audience of fans after Caroline started posting her work on social media. With 110 squares still to go until she completes the roll, Caroline views her project as something which will serve as a record of this time.
