Scotland's colonial past, being an ally & Vanessa Branson on her famous family.

Tony & guests explore Scotland's role in the slave trade and colonialism, the importance of reflecting it honestly in the curriculum, and what it means to be an ally.

Sir Geoff Palmer, Scotland’s first black professor and Professor Emeritus in the School of Life Sciences, Heriot-Watt University, explores Scotland’s prominent role in slavery and colonialism, addressing the contentious issue of what to do about statues and memorials dedicated to those who profited from the Transatlantic slave trade.  
 
Film maker Stewart Kyasimire and Black writer and feminist blogger Claire Heuchan join Geoff Palmer to talk with Tony about how we come to terms with this past, and if including an honest account of this history in the curriculum could change future discussions about race issues.
 
Writer Claire Heuchan and film maker Stewart Kyasimire, are joined by Dundee based artist Sekai Machache, to share their experiences of being Black and Scottish, and how their art forms allow them to explore themes of race, identity and belonging.
 
As pictures of protests across the world have shown people of all ages and races coming together under the banner Black Lives Matter, much has been said of being an ally. Claire Heuchan and Sekai Machache discuss what that term means to them and what they would require from an ally.
 
Archbishop Leo Cushley of St Andrews and Edinburgh shares his thoughts on what the gradual easing of lockdown might mean for churches and places of worship.  
 
Our reporter Bob Dickson and his wife, Maureen, who are very involved in their grandchildren’s lives talk about the difficulty of lockdown, and how they’ve had to grapple with technology to ensure regular online contact.

Arts entrepreneur Vanessa Branson tells the story of her famous family, including her billionaire brother Richard, her passion for the arts, and her Scottish roots, which she has written about in her memoir, One Hundred Summers.
