The challenges facing refugees at home and abroad with Sabir Zazai and Roxana Vilk; poet Nadine Aisha Jassat and comedian Susan Morrison on performing without an audience.

Sabir Zazai, Chief Executive of the Scottish Refugee Council, talks about the particular challenges for refugees during the Covid-19 pandemic, and his own personal story of arriving in the UK as an asylum seeker from Afghanistan.

British/Iranian artist and film maker Roxana Vilk joins Cathy and Sabir to discuss the challenges currently facing refugees both home and abroad, as well as her Lullabies Project, inspired by the songs sung to us as children.

As the holy month of Ramadan closes and Eid approaches, Dr Yahya Barry, founder and director of The Olive Tree Madrasah, an Islamic education institute based in Edinburgh, records a Ramadan diary for us.

What’s it like to perform without an audience? Cathy hears about this conundrum from Roxana Vilk, comedian Susan Morrison, and poet Nadine Aisha Jassat. 

Much has been discussed about the impact of lockdown on mental health, Susan, Roxana and Nadine share their experiences.

Riz Ahmed’s album ‘The Long Goodbye’ has been garlanded with praise, but even more powerful is the short video representing a dark and dystopian Britain that Ahmed no longer recognises as home. Cathy talks to Roxana and Nadine about their reactions on first viewing.
