Kevin Toolis on 'Wonders of the Wake', Grainne and Rose Ashe on Adam's Camp NI supporting families with autism, plus Brenda Palmer & Antoinette Morelli on 'Keep Telling Me Lies'.

'Keep Telling Me Lies' is a play written by Brenda Winter Palmer and performed on stage by Antoinette Morelli - the daughter of Showband singer Tony Morelli from the Witnesses showband. With the Floral Hall as the backdrop and driven by the music of the showbands, this is a play where two wives reminisce about the lifestyles of their globetrotting husbands who experienced fame and fortune, while they were left behind to struggle and bring up their young families. The play is running at the Mac, Belfast, from 9th to 12th May. John Toal finds out about this often overlooked side of the showband era and there’s live music in studio from Brigid Shine. 

Grainne Ashe of Newtownabbey, shares the isolation her family once felt as they struggled to raise her daughter Rose who has autism. Sensory processing issues left everyday chores such as getting washed and dressed very tough for Rose and her family, and she wasn’t able to reach her developmental milestones – such as learning to eat with a fork. This dramatically changed after the family went on a residential retreat to Adam’s Camp in America which helps to support people with autism. At Adam’s Camp therapists were on hand to help Rose reach her full potential, and offered skills to help support the rest of the family. Rose and her family benefited so much from the experience, that Grainne went on to set up Adam’s Camp in Northern Ireland which has now been running for three years and has helped to support 45 families.

Kevin Toolis tells us about the Wonders of the Wake – a Trad Arts Show that revives the ancient Irish art of sorrowful singing called 'keening'. The show is based on Kevin’s book ‘My Father's Wake: How the Irish Teach Us to Live, Love and Die’ and is being performed on 4th May in the Duncairn Arts Centre, Belfast.
