Do carers in Scotland get the support they need?

PHONE-IN
Money for implementing a new law to support unpaid carers in Scotland is being spent inconsistently by councils, according to charities. The Carers (Scotland) Act 2016 came into force last April giving carers a legal right to support. This included counselling, practical help, training and short breaks. Figures given to The Nine suggested more than a quarter of Scottish government funding for councils to roll out the Carers Act has not been spent.

Author Sibel Beadle joins Laura to outline why she’s calling for a change in the law, making daily interaction with children a statutory right for absent parents. Under existing divorce law mums and dads have no statutory right to daily interaction with their children and must rely on the goodwill of their partner for regular communication. In an interview to mark 30 years since he submitted his proposal for the web Sir Tim Berners-Lee has said that global action is required to tackle the internet’s “downward plunge to a dysfunctional future”. Highlighting issues such as data breaches, hacking and misinformation he said he’s “very concerned about nastiness and misinformation spreading.” Laura will be asking has the internet been a force for good and is the genie out of the bottle when it comes to the dark side of the web?
