An in-depth interview with Ruth Wishart, one of Scotland's most formidable journalists; Christian mindfulness; and a remarkable family story about growing up in post-war Germany

Cathy talks to  one of Scotland’s most formidable and experienced journalists, Ruth Wishart. Leaving school at 17, Ruth embarked on a career that’s taken in Scotland’s biggest newspapers as both an editor and columnist. A passionate sports fan and flag-waver for the arts, politically she has become a high profile supporter of Scottish Independence. 

More often associated with Buddhism, there’s a move amongst some Christians to encourage the practice of mindfulness within their faith - to help reduce the stresses and strains of modern life and perhaps reclaim some of the art of contemplation.   Cathy speaks to Richard Johnston, co-founder of the National Mindfulness Day for Christians conference, and  Belinda Norrington, Lead for Pastoral and Wellbeing development at Zeo Church, in Hitchin.

Last month an American TV mini-series called ‘The Holocaust’ was shown in Germany for the first time since its original broadcast 40 years ago. Back in 1979 it began a series of conversations and reflections across the German nation about how it saw its recent painful history under the Nazi regime.  Rev Sigrid Marten, minister of Balfron Church linked with Fintry Kirk, recalls watching it as a teenager, alongside her grandmother. She tells Cathy how it began a personal realisation about her own family’s involvement during the Nazi era.

Peter Howson is one of Scotland’s greatest living artists. This week, a new film about Peter’s creative process, will be shown at the Glasgow Film Festival. Prophecy charts the process of creating his powerful 2017 piece of the same name which depicts an apocalyptic vision of society in a post-Brexit world of anguish, horror and social discord.  Art historian Anne Ellis reviews the film.

One Sunday night two years ago Anne Hughes was getting up from the dinner table and suddenly collapsed. She’d suffered a brain aneurysm and was rushed to hospital. She recovered but it became a defining moment in her life. Anne was already on a quest for self-discovery but this incident made her realise what really mattered to her. Anne shares her story with Cathy, and tells her about her role on the new BBC Scotland channel which launches tonight (Sunday).
