Acting US Defense Secretary arrives in Kabul on unannounced visit

Afghan government officials say the acting US defence secretary, Patrick Shanahan, has assured them that the US will not abandon the Afghan security forces in their fight against terrorism. 

The comments emerged after Mr Shanahan's meeting with his Afghan counterpart in Kabul, on a visit that comes amid a flurry of diplomatic activity involving Taliban militants.

Also on the programme: thousands of Iranians attend rallies celebrating four decades since the Islamic revolution; and more on a new orchestral composition that tells the story of survival through the Holocaust in the Netherlands.
