It wasn’t just guys in garages in Pao Alto who helped to invent the internet. As Emer Maguire discovers in her conversation with writer Claire L. Evans, Ada Lovelace wrote the first computer program in the Victorian era, Grace Hopper, a mathematician who enlisted in the navy during the Second World War, was the ‘third programmer of the world’s first computer’ and, in 1990 Stacy Horn, founded Echo, a NYC-based online service filled with people who logged in everyday to talk about work, love and what's on TV
