What began as a year of celebrating the 25th anniversary of Northern Broadsides has become a long goodbye for the founder and artistic director of the company, Barrie Rutter. Less than 12 months ago, Barrie Rutter was looking ahead to a triumphant 25th year for the company he birthed in a Hull shipyard. A cloud was on the horizon. Rutter hoped the Arts Council would fund his ambitions for the company's future. When the news came that funding would not be granted for the big plans he had, Rutter made a drastic decision that will change the course of one of British theatre's most significant stories. A tale of legacy, honour and the iniquity of arts funding between London and the North, 'They Heard Me at the Back' follows Northern Broadsides in the most significant and tumultuous year since its creation.
