Joey is a young horse who is initially looked after by Albert on his father's farm and is later sold to the army at the outbreak of WW1. Joey is trained as a cavalry horse, then sent to the Western Front where he experiences the horrors of the War. He is captured by the Germans and put to work hauling ambulance wagons and gun carriages, until finally he is wounded and becomes stranded in no-man’s-land between the enemy lines. But Albert has also joined the army...and is hoping to find Joey.

The year is 1912 and a gangly colt is sold at auction to a Devon farmer and taken away from its mother. After some rough handling the colt is led back to the farm where he makes friends with the farmer’s son, 13-year-old Albert Narracott, who names the colt Joey. Joey and Albert become inseparable, but Joey’s idyllic life on the farm is threatened when Albert’s father threatens to sell him if he isn’t put in harness and ploughing within a week.
