He has been one of the most controversial figures in Irish politics. But now Gerry Adams is stepping down as leader of Sinn Fein and also as a Louth TD. Edited since transmission.

He's been one of the most recognisable and controversial figures in Irish politics. But now Gerry Adams is stepping down as leader of Sinn Fein and also as a Louth TD.

What political influence he will continue to have remains to be seen. What we do know is that Michelle O'Neill won't be Sinn Fein's next president, as she ruled herself out yesterday.
