An abridgement of Michael Morpurgo’s much-loved novel 'War Horse'. Joey is a young horse who is initially looked after by Albert on his father's farm and is later sold to the army at the outbreak of WW1. Joey is trained as a cavalry horse, then sent to the Western Front where he experiences the horrors of the War. He is captured by the Germans and put to work hauling ambulance wagons and gun carriages, until finally he is wounded and becomes stranded in no-man’s-land between the enemy lines. But Albert has also joined the army...and is hoping to find Joey.

Joey and Topthorn endure a tough life hauling a gun carriage around the Front. The conditions take their toll on Topthorn, but he is cared for by an old soldier called Friedrich.

Joey and Topthorn find themselves back in the fearful noise and stench of battle, hauling their gun carriage to the front line. Life is tough for the army horses living outside in all weathers and Joey sees the conditions take their toll on all the horses, but particularly on his friend, Topthorn. But Topthorn survives under the care of a new friend, a German soldier called Friedrich.
