1649: Colonel Hacker faces a dilemma when the usual hangman refuses to carry out the execution of King Charles I - fearing for his own life. 

A replacement is sought within the regiment, and Sergeant Jack Melford is asked to use his farrier's axe. But the deed proves to be a fearful burden...

Roderick Graham's historical drama stars Struan Rodger as Jack Melford, Sara Kestelman as Mary, Christopher Benjamin as Lord Bolton, Peter Baldwin as Captain Whittingham and John Samson as Colonel Francis Hacker.
