A performance of Berg's Wozzeck, given at the Royal Opera House in Covent Garden.

As part of the season Breaking Free - the minds that changed music, Penny Gore presents a performance of Berg's Wozzeck, given at the Royal Opera House in Covent Garden.

Breaking Free - the minds that changed music. Penny Gore presents today's Thursday Opera Matinee - a performance of Berg's Wozzeck from the Royal Opera House. Based on Buchner's play Woyzeck, Berg selected fifteen scenes to created a highly structured piece with vivid characters. Simon Keenlyside sings the put-upon soldier Wozzeck, and Karita Mattila his doomed wife Marie. Plus a performance of Berg's Violin Concerto, written in memory of Alma Mahler's daughter.

The World of the Second Viennese School in 5 Objects
Tom McKinney visits Nos 13 and 23 Pyrkergasse on the outskirts of Vienna; Beethoven having lived in the former address and Arnold Rose in the second. Both Beethoven and Rose were key to the Second Viennese School, and Berg was fascinated by the number 23 while Schoenberg was fearful of the number 13.
