BBC World Service - Weekend, New Year Delayed By One Second

A "leap second" will be added to this year's New Year's countdown

A "leap second" will be added to this year's New Year's countdown to compensate for a slowdown in the Earth's rotation.

An extra second will be added to clocks at New Year by the world's timekeepers  - making the countdown to midnight take a little longer. This is being done to keep our time in sync with the Earth's rotation. 

Also in the programme, UK editor of the Russian news agency Sputnik News International on the Russia-US row.
