A special programme from the 2016 Scottish Rural Parliament in Brechin.

Euan McIlwraith and Laura Cuthill present a special programme from the 2016 Scottish Rural Parliament in Brechin, a three-day event all about living and working in rural Scotland.

This week we bring you a special programme from The 2016 Scottish Rural Parliament in Brechin, a three day event running from Thursday to Saturday.

We speak to Amanda Burgauer, chair of Scottish Rural Action to find out more about the parliament as well as guest speaker Cabinet Secretary Fergus Ewing.

Mark is at the re-opening of the abattoir in Brechin speaking to pig farmers and chair of Quality Pork Limited, Rodrick Bruce about how important the renovated slaughterhouse is to the industry.

To find out more about its surprising history, Euan takes a walking tour of Brechin with retired school teacher and local historian Brian Mitchell 

The team set researcher Emily Esson the task of getting from Aberdeen to the Rural Parliament via public transport to examine how good the country's transport links are. 

Euan meets up with Dalhousie Estate Factor Richard Cooke to find out about the micro hydro turbines they have installed to reduce the energy consumption on the estate. 

Brechin and the surrounding area is rich with Pictish heritage. Mark speaks to local historian Norman Atkinson about some particularly impressive stones at Aberlemno.

Laura heads up Glen Esk and meets Brian Park, manager of The Retreat, and other residents of the glen to find out how lack of mobile signal and internet connection impacts life in the glen. 

Laura meets the chairperson of award winning Angus organisation The Food Life at a coffee roastery in Arbroath and Euan talks school dinners with other Food Life members.

And we take a walk around Mutron Nature Reserve just outside Forfar with site manager Alison Eilliot to find out what they are doing to help young people in the area gain employment.
