Series 1

Ospreys

Duration: 15 minutes

First broadcast: on School RadioLatest broadcast: on School Radio

Available for over a year

Ospreys are one of Scotland's largest and most powerful birds of prey. With their powerful eyesight and huge hooked talons, they can catch a fish out of the sea or a loch with ease.

Join a group of children in the north of Scotland as they use a telescope and binoculars to watch an osprey family in a distant nest. The young ospreys are learning to fly, and soon they will make a huge journey south to Africa for the winter. On the journey, they will have to catch fish for the first time, and there may be are other dangers on their way, like storms and electric cables.

This journey takes them over the north of Spain, and people there can see them fly overhead. We hear from Anabel and Jon, two local children who love the ospreys.
They have learned a song about the ospreys at school.

The programme contains two interactive sections:
- learning to recognise an osprey’s call, and copying it.
- an activity section which will involve children moving around in a space, pretending to be an osprey hunting for a fish, spotting one, and preparing to dive into the loch to catch it.

The programme is presented by Lucy Goldie. Show less
