A a state of emergency has been declared in North Carolina in response to continuing unrest in the city of Charlotte over the fatal shooting of a black man  by police. The governor is taking steps to deploy the National Guard.

The US military is investigating whether a shell fired at American troops in Iraq contained a chemical agent.
