April 21, 1926 is a significant date for both households. 

While the old Earl of Minster is laid to rest and his son, William assumes the title, the King and Queen await the birth of a royal grandchild. 

William's wife, Alice, is lady-in-waiting to Queen Mary, and through her the families are drawn together; but at the heart of the story is the house itself, set in its magical garden, slowly maturing in beauty year by year, as the saga unfolds.
