An abridgement of Friend or Foe by Michael Morpurgo. The story is a classic tale of secrecy and adventure set during World War Two. David Carey and his friend Tucky, two boys from London, are evacuated to the Devon countryside. As they adjust to their new life away from the city, one night the skyline of the moor is lit up with gun flashes and the memory of war threatens to shatter their new-found peace.

Whilst searching for the plane, David falls into a river. A mysterious person saves him.

On the night when the boys were home alone and the Germans were bombing Plymouth, David and Tucky are convinced they saw a German plane crash miles out on the moor behind the farm. However, despite a search party of army, the police and the Home Guard, no trace of a German plane is found on the moor. David and Tucky are the laughing stock of the village and everyone thinks they made it all up to get a day off school. The boys decide to conduct their own search of the moor but as they’re returning home, dejected and disheartened having found nothing, David slips, falls into a river and is pulled under by the current. Luckily, a mysterious person comes to his rescue.
