After a long and dreary train journey to Exeter, the boys board a coach and are driven through the dark night to the village where they’ll be staying as evacuees. Tired and hungry after their journey, the boys are served soup and sandwiches in the village hall, which cheers them up a bit. But when it comes to deciding which boys will go to which homes, it quickly becomes clear that someone hasn’t turned up to collect a boy and no one has room for David and Tucky.
