DJ Semtex tells the story of Olympic host city Rio de Janeiro's growing hip-hop scene.

Away from the gleaming stadiums and corporate sponsorship, Rap in Rio shows the gritty flip-side of the Olympic host city through the lens of its rap and hip-hop culture. DJ Semtex explores a scene that has boomed in recent years, its MCs emerging from the city's troubled favelas to deliver increasingly political messages and party music to millions of fans. 

We'll hear about what makes Rio hip-hop unique from OG Papo Reto. Rising stars Cartel MCs and Croc tell of life growing up in the favelas, and how this has shaped a new, politicised sub-genre that is distinct from the local 'funk' that since the 1980s has glorified drugs and violence. The Apple Woman tells of her battle to cut through the dominant machismo as a female artist, and British grime star Bugzy Malone samples the party scene to find out what all the fuss is about.
