Nina Bawden's classic World War 2 story of children evacuated from London to Wales. Carrie and her younger brother Nick are evacuated to Wales to spend the war years with the dour Mr Evans and his sister 'Auntie' Lou. Carrie and Nick spend much of their time at 'Druid's Bottom' - a mysterious house where Hepzibah, the housekeeper, tells them strange stories about skulls and curses. Carrie and Nick settle into their new lives...and then Carrie does something she’ll regret for years to come.

It’s Carrie’s birthday and Albert Sandwich kisses her! Mr Evans is cross when they get back because they’re late. An American soldier comes looking for Auntie Lou.

It’s Carrie’s birthday, and after a party at Druid’s Bottom, Albert Sandwich kisses her! Mr Evans is cross when they get back because they’re late, but then he turns on Auntie Lou, who is all dressed up and wearing lipstick. Hepzibah explains to Carrie why there is such tension between Mr Evans, Auntie Lou and Mrs Gotobed. An American soldier comes looking for Auntie Lou to take her out. Carrie tells him to go away but Nick says she’s wrong and they run to fetch her.
