Why do people copy famous works of art and who buys them?

Why do painters copy famous works of art, brush stroke by brush stroke? And, why are people willing to  buy something that will never be an original.

Why do people try to create old masters and modern art, brush stroke by brush stroke? And, why do people buy them?
