Malick's snapshots from the late '50s through to the early '70s capture the carefree spirit of the youth. At the time they were asserting their freedom in the early days of independence from colonialism. Then, in the '80s a coup ushered in decades of austere military dictatorship and the direction of the country and its people changed dramatically.
