With Margaret Cookhorn (contra-bassoon) and the CBSO conducted by Andris Nelsons. Scored for the unusual combination of solo contra-bassoon and orchestra, John Woolrich's Falling Down was commissioned by the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, and is dedicated to Margaret Cookhorn, the orchestra's contra-bassoon player, who premiered the piece with the CBSO and Andris Nelsons at Symphony Hall, Birmingham in 2009. The piece is inspired in part by Goya's experimental print series, Los caprichos, hence the subtitle: 'A capricho for double bassoon and orchestra.' In his programme note, Paul Conway suggests that 'In Falling Down the two protagonists adopt a non-combative approach as the soloist's rich, purring timbre is complemented by contributions from sonorous confederates such as cor anglais, trombones, tuba, bass drum and lion's roar.'
